Acetaminophen Overdose Symptoms and Precautions

They are cold medicines, available under brand names like Alka-Seltzer Plus Night Time Cold Liquigel, All-Nite Cold, Nyquil Cold Medicine, Nyquil Hot Therapy, Nyquil Liquicap, Robitussin Night Cold, Tylenol Flu NightTime.

Acetaminophen overdose is very common, because people use acetaminophen a lot.

Acetaminophen is used to reliever pain and bring down fever.

Doxylamine is an antihistamine used in reducing the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine produces symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Dextromethorphan is medicine used as a cough suppressant. It affects the cough reflex in the brain that triggers coughing.

Pseudoephedrine is used to a decongestion drug which shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).

  • Hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Extreme and unusual thoughts
  • Shallow and very slow breathing
  • Weakness
  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Flu symptoms
  • Severe headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Chest pain
  • Numbness
  • Seizure; or nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Low fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark urine
  • Clay-colored stools
  • Jaundice.

You should always make it a point to ask the doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. There have been instances of death from the misuse of cough or cold medicine in very young children.

Before taking acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, doxylamine, and pseudoephedrine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any type of drugs. Inform the doctor if you have liver disease; suffer from high blood pressure; diabetes; alcoholism; heart disease; or thyroid disorder.

You should also consult your doctor if the acetaminophen overdose symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash.

Mild side Effects or symptoms of an acetaminophen overdose, overdose of Doxylamine, Dextromethorphan, and Pseudoephedrine may include, mild loss of appetite, upset stomach; warmth, tingling, or redness under your skin, sleep problems, feeling excited or restless, skin rash or itching, Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.

Discuss with your doctor about any symptoms due to acetaminophen overdose, overdose of Doxylamine, Dextromethorphan, and Pseudoephedrine if they seem unusual or that is bothersome in an abnormal way, feeling excited or restless, or things like skin rash or itching. Don’t visit the net, or take cues from someone who has undergone a similar experience before.
