Next time you eat an apple eat it with the peel. The research has proved that apple peels have anti cancer properties.
It’s therefore wrong to throw the peels in the dustbin. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
It has been proved time and again that diet rich in fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of hear disease, cancer, diabetes, and a many other chronic diseases.
The researchers are trying to specifically identify compounds found in fruits and vegetables that are responsible for these healthy benefits.
Recent researches have been on phenolics (anti-cancer properties of a group of phytochemicals) which are typically found in the seeds and skins of fruit and vegetables.
The latest addition is that a reasearch shows that anticancer properties in apples lie in it’s peel.
Apples are the lbiggest source of phenolics in an American diet, say about 22% of all fruit phenolics consumed in the United States.
It has been found that the average phenolic content in an apple ranges anywhere between 110 milligrams to 347 milligrams per 100 grams of fresh apple.
Not only phenolic, apples are also found to be high in one more group of healthy compounds called flavonoids.
Researchers studies the chemical composition of apple peels in detail and identified a group of phytochemicals that proved to work and fight against breast cancer, colon cancer, and liver cancer cells.
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry published a study about how group of researchers processed 231 pounds of red fresh apples and were able to successfully extract the chemical content of around 24 pounds of apple peel.
After extracting chemical content they next screened this chemical compounds to check out their anti-cancer properties and actually found a group of phytochemicals which had powerful anticancer properties.
The research showed that apple peels were more potent than apple flesh in antioxidant activity and anti-cell proliferation properties against human cancer cells.
The study also found that apple peel boasts of major share of apple’s anticancer and anti disease properties and therefore should be considered as a rich source of nutrients as well as antioxidants.
