Food Poisoning Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Food poisoning is something almost everyone undergoes at some point of time. It is a common illness. In majority of cases it is mild but in exceptional cases it can get serious.
Symptoms of food poisoning depend on the type of infected virus or bacteria as well as the amount consumed by way of drink or food. These symptoms can start to show as quickly as within 30 minutes of eating or drinking, or slowly, worsening over days and weeks.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. These come up suddenly after a day or two of having eaten or drunk something that may be infected with germs or contaminated.
The extent of illness that may follow depends on the poison or infection in the food and can give you one or more of these blood in stools, fever and chills, dehydration and damage of nervous system. If a group of people or say people in the party has had the same food the same symptoms may show in everyone who consumed the food.
Food may get contaminated due to many reasons. Like, poor hygiene, sanitation or process of preparation or packaging.
People working on the processing of food are working under unhygienic conditions. Like not washing their hands after using toilet. If people handling the food are infected with some illness already the same may get transferred to food they are preparing. Food stored at the wrong temperature also promotes contamination.
Ineffective agents that may cause food poisoning include viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
Toxic agents that may result into food poisoning include poisonous mushrooms, improperly prepared exotic foods like barracuda, or pesticides sprinkled over fruits and vegetables.
It’s time to see a doctor if there is high fever, you keep throwing up and cannot keep any liquid inside. To the extent hat you are not able to take your regular medicines because of vomiting.
If your child is below three and shows even mild symptoms he/she has to be taken to doctor on priority. Swelling in the abdomen, yellowing of eyes, blood in bowel movement, develop problem swallowing are some more symptoms.
