Spotlight on Pancreatic Cancer

With the death of Luciano Pavarotti from pancreatic cancer the spotlight is rather on this disease and how it occurs.

It is a serious cancer that develops because cancerous cells build up in pancreatic tissues. The pancreas produces digestive enzymes that break down the food we eat, producing hormones such as insulin that control the blood sugar levels in our body.

These hormones also help to control the carbohydrate metabolism.

The danger with pancreatic cancer is that it is difficult to diagnose and unlikely to be detected in its early stages but then spreads very rapidly. Its symptoms may not manifest themselves until the cancer is at an advanced stage by which time it would have metastasized in various other parts of the body and treatment such as surgery may not be possible. The Problem of Ovarian Cysts

The ovaries are two almond-sized and -shaped organs that are found on each side of a woman’s uterus. Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid that can be found inside or on the surface of the ovaries.

Ovarian cysts can occur at any time of a woman’s life and most do not cause discomfort or pain disappearing even without treatment in a few months.

In some cases, however, the symptoms of ovarian cysts are serious especially if they have ruptured. These symptoms can resemble those of other conditions such as an ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, appendicitis, or ovarian cancer.

So the symptoms alone will not signify the presence of ovarian cysts and there may not in fact be any symptoms at all.

However, you can be alert for the following symptoms, which should indicate that you should go in for a pelvic examination: irregularities in the menstrual cycle with pain in the pelvis before it begins or ends; a persistent or dull ache affecting the lower back and thighs; bowel pain; sensation of nausea, vomiting or tenderness in the breasts; a heavy kind of feeling in the abdomen; and an inability to empty your bladder completely. Trans Fatty Acids – The Dangers of This Fat

They are being banned in restaurant and fast food joints, there are the trans fatty acids that lead most to cholesterol and heart disease. It is now mandatory for food manufacturers to declare trans fats on food labels.

Fats are usually saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats. Trans fats are mostly artificial fats but can occur naturally in dairy and meat products.

There is a process called partial hydrogenation through which trans fats are made. Liquid vegetable oil is a healthy monounsaturated fat. It is full of hydrogen atoms that can be changed into fats. The food industry found this an ideal fat to work with because it had a smooth texture and could be reused for deep-frying. Continue reading “Trans Fatty Acids – The Dangers of This Fat”
